Flax Seeds

About Flax Seeds

The flax plant is responsible for flax seed, linen, and linseed oil.  It has been cultivated since at least 3000 BC.  There are 2 basic types of flax seeds: yellow (golden) and brown.  In North America, most of the golden flax seed comes from the United States (South Dakota) and most of the brown flax seed comes from Canada.  There is a lot of marketing hype to which is better for you, but in our opinion, they are too similar to really worry about.

Flax Seeds have a hard outer shell and can be eaten whole – which will give you insoluble fiber – which benefits your digestive tract.  Inside the shell are the omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and soluble fiber.  In order to reap the benefits of what’s inside the flaxseed, you need to have it ground; as your body will not be able to digest through the shell.  When you put the flax seeds (or superfood mix) into a blender, it will grind it up.

Flax seeds can be found in all our superfood mixes.

Contains magnesium (98% RDA), which Prevents exercise induced reduction in thyroid hormone. Contains selenium (36% RDA), which is related to a healthy thyroid. Low selenium levels in the thyroid tissue may increase thyroid cancer risk. Selenium may reduce antithyroid peroxidase antibodies’ levels in patients with Hashimoto disease. In areas with selenium deficiency there is a higher incidence of thyroiditis due to a decreased activity of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase activity within thyroid cells. Low serum selenium was associated with a larger thyroid volume and a higher prevalence of thyroid enlargement. Contains zinc (29% RDA). A deficiency may contribute to thyroid cancer and increase thyroid volume. It prevents exercise induced reduction of thyroid hormones and testosterone.

Menopause: Score 96

Summary:

Human: Flax seeds are effective in reducing menopausal symptoms without increasing blood levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol, as well as in the endometrial thickness and vaginal epithelial maturation value. Flax seeds have a significant effect in managing hot flash in women not taking estrogen therapy. Animal: Flax seeds alter estrogen metabolite excretion by increasing the beneficial 2-hydroxyestrone metabolite relative to the harmful 16-hydroxylestrone metabolite.

It increases the breast cancer inhibitory effects of tamoxifen. They have potent anti-estrogenic effects on estrogen receptor positive breast cancer and may prove to be beneficial in breast cancer prevention strategies. It reduces the growth of human breast tumors at high levels of circulating estrogen. It reduces human breast tumor growth.
