Grapes (fresh)
About Grapes
Cultivation of grapes began over 6,000 years ago in the Middle East. Red/purple grapes contain anthocyanins – which are polyphenol antioxidants that are responsible for turning the grape red.
Nutrition Benefits of Grapes
Grapes have been linked to benefits related to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, inflammation, acne, alzheimers, allergies, eye health, gout, and other health conditions. A lot of this is from their antioxidant properties, in particular their high amount of polyphenols. Many people are familiar that grapes contain resveratrol, which has been linked to various health benefits. Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol antioxidant.
Red grapes contain more flavonoid antioxidants than green grapes. You can use whatever grapes you like, but if you are looking to maximize the nutritional benefits – choose red grapes.
Smoothie Tips
Many of our fruitier recipes call for grapes. We are actually using whole grapes as the liquid source of the smoothie, but we do not call for grape juice. The skins and seeds of the grapes contain the highest concentration of antioxidants, which is why we like to use the whole food instead of just juice.
