Candida albicans is the most common species of yeast (fungus) that infects humans. Candida normally lives on the skin and mucous membranes without overgrowing.
When you think about candida albicans, you probably imagine a fungal infection that invades your body. What you need to realize is that candida is always in your body, so it is not an infection, but rather an overgrowth that causes the problems.
When an overgrowth occurs, it means that the systems which maintain balance have failed to do their job.
What are ways the body systems fail, which allow the overgrowth to occur?
One way candida overgrow occurs is that your body metabolism lowers, causing a drop in body temperature. Candida thrives when the internal body temperature drops. When the body metabolism drops, it means that less energy is being produced. When less energy is produced, the stomach is unable to produce enough hydrochloric acid. When there is an inadequate level of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, food is not fully digested and microorganisms on the food, such as fungi, are not properly killed off.
Another way that candida can overgrow is by a dying off of the good bacteria that live in the gut. These good bacteria are essential for health. Without them, you cannot make certain vitamins, your immune system will not work properly and your brain chemicals will be off. Another important role of the good bacteria is to keep the bad microorganism in check. If your good bacteria levels drop, you can get an overgrowth of candida.
Some of the ways that good bacteria are killed off are: antibiotics from prescriptions or from meat that has been injected with antibiotics such as beef. Artificial sweeteners, such as sucralose can also kill good bacteria.
A third way candida can overgrow is a weakened immune system. The very young and very old already have weak immune systems. That is why they are more susceptible to illness.
Once candida is a problem, it becomes more of a problem by releasing gliotoxins, which weaken the immune system even further. Your body will then produce inflammatory chemicals called cytokines. Once cytokines have been released for a period of time, you have what is called chronic inflammation. This chronic inflammation causes many other problems in the body including heart disease and autoimmune conditions.
Drinking alcohol, eating sugar and processed grains are known to “feed” candida, which promotes candida overgrowth.
Recommendations for Candida
There are no prescribed drugs that control candida, so patients really need to be strict with a “natural” approach.
I recommend that my patients eat a low sugar and no alcohol diet to get the candida overgrowth back under control.
I have my patients eat the foods that are shown to be protective. (list of foods and recipes here)
I also recommend that they take the following supplements:
After the candida is back under control, the patient will no longer need to take ADP. At that time, I recommend taking biodophilus caps at 1-3 per day for 6 – 12 months.
Most patients are also recommended Hydrozyme, which is hydrochloric acid.
Some patients are recommended Thyrostim. This is a supplement that supports the thyroid gland. This can raise the body metabolism.
For my patients, I find out exactly what they need to be taking with blood work. (more info here)
